Lovewell Reservoir Waterfowl Report
|Waterfowl numbers||Light Goose Conservation Season OPEN. 500,000 - 750,000 light geese and more migrating in. Lost about half the numbers from the weekend. 12,000 ducks, all species but mostly pintails and mallards. 2,000 dark geese and a few white-fronts, with a mix of Canada species and a few white-fronts. |Water level||Reservoir is 4.5 ft below conservation pool and 99% frozen.Waterfowl are keeping a few small holes open but larger areas are open in the refuge area just off Walleye Point in the State Park. Inflows to Lovewell from the Courtland Canal began 12/2 and have ceased.|
|Hunting condition||RESERVOIR 99% FROZEN. NO BOAT RAMPS OPEN.Bitterly cold weather front moved into the area over the weekend with breezy conditions and drastically dropping daily temperatures which rapidly made ice. This week light snow and drastically colder temps will keep small water bodies frozen including farm ponds. Sheet water showing up on top of ice on days above freezing. Some slivers of shoreline areas open. 1 -3 " snow cover but chances for more Wednesday. Private land agricultural fields are mostly open but the ground is frozen. Still drifts in places. Cold predicted to last until Thursday. More snow, sleet and freezing rain predicted for the middle to end of the week Then more seasonally warm temps for Saturday and the next several days after that. Muddy conditions will begin after that.|
|Expected hunting success||Fair to Good on private land. Geese numbers fluctuate widely with snow covering feed fields. Geese feeding in Kansas and NebraskaMore geese to the south and east of the area.|

FREE DAILY HUNT PERMITS REQUIRED FOR ALL HUNTING ON THE AREA. PERMITS AVAILABLE AT THE INFORMATION CENTERS. Hunters will again be required to fill out a daily use permit to report their hunting activities while on the area. The top portion of the two-part permit must be filled out and returned to the survey station prior to hunting and the bottom portion kept with the hunter to record hunting activity. After the hunt the bottom portion is also returned to the survey station where the permits will be collected and information recorded to assist managers with improving the area. THE REFUGE IS CLOSED FROM NOVEMBER 1 TO JANUARY 31 on the NORTHEAST half of the reservoir and Wildlife Area from 1/8th mile west of the south end of the dam and following a buoy line northwest to the western boundary of the Cabin Area. No hunting from the park shoreline. Please introduce youth and novice hunters to the outdoors. Pass it on!
