Fishing Newsletter

All KDWPT fisheries districts are offering a fishing newsletter that can be sent out to all that want it. The newsletters are aimed at keeping anglers informed about fishing opportunities and information in their areas of interest. The first few editions of the Cheney Fisheries District have been completed and are ready for distribution.

Zebra Mussels

Zebra mussels can be found attached to rocks lakewide. Zebra mussel veligers are too small to be seen with the unaided eye and they can be found in boat livewells, minnow buckets, boat bilges, water toys and anything else that is capable of holding even a small amount of water. Be sure to drain all equipment before leaving the lake to avoid moving veligers to other waters. THIS INCLUDES MINNOW BUCKETS, BOAT LIVEWELLS AND BILGES!!!

Zebra mussel numbers have decreased at Cheney; however, anglers and boaters should still use caution to avoid moving adults and veligers from the lake.

White Bass and Wiper

Excellent

Various

White bass and wiper fishing is spotty, but if you find them, fishing is excellent. Fish on shallow main lake points trolling crankbaits and sassy shad. Shore anglers are having luck using Kastmasters in the evenings. Try shallow points and dropoffs in the area between the refuge and Walleye Island.

Walleye

Good

Up to 28"

Walleye fishing has picked up nicely. Fish are up shallow on flats and humps in 6-10 feet of water. Dragging night crawlers has produced some fish and a few have been picked up trolling.

Crappie

Fair

Up to 15"

The crappie spawn is winding down. A few fish still being caught around the marina and on the east end of the dam.

Channel Catfish

Good

Up to 10 lb

Fish on windblown shores lakewide. Catfish should be moving into shallow rocks for the spawn. Fishing has also been good in the river in holes near cover.

White Perch

Netting results in 2012 were encouraging again as there are many catchable size white perch (10+") in the lake. Netting results indicate that white perch numbers continue to decrease and average size has again increased. We still have a long way to go in controlling this invasive species, but it looks like we're on the right track.

White perch cannot be used as live bait, but they do make good cut bait. For tips on identifying a white perch from a white bass, wiper or striped bass click HERE.

All white perch in your possession must be dead. It is illegal to posses live white perch.

The lake is approximately 5 feet low and the east Marina ramp is useable; however, the water level is still low. Launch at your own risk.

Shore anglers are reminded to NOT drive onto the exposed lake bed as it will get you stuck and an expensive ticket. Only drive on maintained roads.

Anglers reporting success in the creeks, mainlake and coves on jigs or minnows. Creel limit 20/day

2.7 feet below normal pool releasing 10 CFS. Click HERE for water level information.

All Corps of Engineers boat ramps are usable after the 2.5 foot rise in lake elevation.

Two Wildlife Area boat ramps are present at the lake. The Munker's Creek boat ramp is open. Boaters should use caution at this ramp. Larger boats with longer trailers requiring deeper water may have difficulty launching with current low water conditions. The Neosho River boat ramp is open.

Blue catfish

Anglers fishing cut shad along channel breaks are having some success on blue catfish. Most fish are 14 to 20-inch but some larger fish have been caught.

These fish are below the 35-inch minimum length limit and must be released immediately. Take time to properly identify your catfish catch. Click HERE for information on how to properly identify your catch.

During July 2005, the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks stocked 600 tagged blue catfish in to El Dorado Reservoir. The stocked fish ranged in length from 10 to 23 inches. The minimum length limit for blue catfish at El Dorado is 35 inches so nearly all tagged fish will need to be released. The tag is located at the base of the dorsal fin and is yellow in color. If you catch a tagged fish at El Dorado Reservoir record the 5-digit number on the tag, measure the length of the fish, promptly release the fish with the tag intact, note the location the fish was caught, and contact the fisheries biologist at 316-322-7513. Information received from anglers regarding tagged blue catfish will provide useful information to the biologists and will assist in the tracking of the population. Thank you for your assistance!

Shallow water flats, submerged roads, channel edges, and windblown points trolling crankbaits or casting jig and plastic.

Be sure to properly ID your catch as there is there is an 21-inch minimum length limit and 2/day creel limit on wiper.. Click HERE for tips on identifying wipers.

White bass

Up to 15-inch

Same as wiper report. Anglers are reporting catching more wiper than white bass recently.

Wipers can be caught along with white bass so it is important to properly identify your catch before putting it on a stringer. Click HERE for tips on identifying wipers.

White Perch

Fair

Up to 7-inch

Small hooks and pieces of worm are always a good bet for white perch.

White crappie

Fair to Good

7 to 14-inch

Crappie are still being caught at a variety of depths from 2 feet to 20 feet. Fish are shallower in the upper ends of the lake. Anglers are doing well near channel edges with timber. Jigs or jigs tipped with minnows have been productive.

Channel Catfish

Fair

up to 22-inch

On shallow points or channel edges in the old Bluestem Lake area. Worms, livers, or shad sides are producing.

Walleye

Very Good

up to 26-inch

Walleye are on the flats and are being caught on jig-n-crawler, trolling crank baits, jig and plastic, and casting hard baits. Good numbers of limits being reported.

Anglers are reporting catching a lot of 19 to 20-inch walleye. Please quickly return these fish to the lake. Today's shorts are tomorrow's keepers!

THE WALLEYE LENGTH LIMIT IS 21-INCHES WITH A 2/day CREEL LIMIT.

Two of the State Park boat ramps are closed. The Area 1 boat ramp (east of Shady Creek Marina) and the Boulder Bluff South ramp are closed due to low water.

There are three boat ramps within the Wildlife Area. The NE 70th Street Ramp located in the northeast part of the lake just south of the Turnpike is closed. The NE 60th Street Ramp located on the upper west end of the lake is open. The Chelsea Boat ramp on the east shore of the lake is open.

Watch for stumps, rock piles, shallow points, and mudflats while boating. Slow to idle speeds in areas that you are not fully familiar with.

ZEBRA MUSSEL & WHITE PERCH WARNING! El Dorado Reservoir and the Walnut River below the reservoir contain zebra mussels and white perch. Take zebra mussel control precautions when leaving the lake, Trout Area, and Stilling Basin. For information on Zebra Mussels click Here.

Channel cat can be caught on a variety of baits such as livers, stinkbait, and shrimp. Drifting and fishing with shad sides or small, whole shad has proven to be very productive. If fishing from shore try off of jetties or near any rocky or woody areas.

Fish around brushpiles and creek channel dropoffs with small jigs or spoons. Crappie at Marion tend to congregate at the dam and broken bridge, but anglers have had good luck in the coves in the last couple of weeks.

Walleye

Due to the low water levels, the boat ramp at Marion Cove is the only useable ramp at the time of this report. For more information about ramp conditions, please contact the US Army Corps of Engineers office at Marion Reservoir by calling (620) 382-2101.

Cats are being caught in the upper ends of the lake on nightcrawlers. Also on fresh but bait in the shallow shoreline cover.

Creel limit 2/day Length Limit 15-inches.

Largemouth Bass

Shallow shorelines on crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and large plastics.

Black Crappie

Fair to Good

up to 10-inch

Fish are up shallow in the weed beds along shore. Small jigs or minnows will produce fish. Most crappie at Butler are in the 6-8 inch range.

Bluegill

Good

4 to 7-inch

Bluegill are on the beds throughout the lake and creek. Sight fishing the beds with a small live bait offering under a small float is a great tactic. This is also a good time to use flyfishing tackle for the panfish at the lake.

Redear Sunfish

Same as Bluegill

The lake level is back to normal. The ramp and courtesy dock are now fully functional. The picture below shows the lake as of 2:00PM on 4-26-2013.

Redears are sitting on nests. This is a good time to fish for the panfish at the lake. Areas between the fishing piers and other gradually sloping, gravelly areas are good locations.

A few surplus channel catfish have been stocked. Mostly 10-inch fish have been stocked, but some large adults (5+ pounds) have also been stocked recently.

Largemouth Bass

About 6,000 (5-10") largemouth were stocked in November 2012. More fingerling bass will be stocked in the spring. These fish will grow quickly in the renovated lake and fishing should be exciting for sublegal bass in 2013.

Northern Pike

Northern pike fingerlings have been stocked. These fish will grow quickly and will likely be 12-15" this fall and possibly 25-30" next fall.

Bluegill

Small bluegill were recently stocked. Most were under 3", but these fish will grow quickly. By late summer, they should provide some angling potential.

The lake was renovated in the fall of 2012 and thus has limited angling potential. Some small bass and decent channel catfish have been stocked, but these populations are fairly limited. The lake is now full.

Some nice channel catfish have been caught on cutbait and shrimp. The feeders are now full and will go off in the morning and evening.

Crappie fishing has been good, mostly for small fish though. Recent sampling showed some crappie in the 14 inch range.

Largemouth bass

Up to 5 lb.

Some 20+" fish have been caught already this spring. Recent sampling showed the best numbers in submerged vegetation. The population looks great, with the big fish of the sample weighing in at 7.1 lb.

Saugeye

Fair

15-20"

Anglers have been catching quite a few saugeye lately on jigs. The big fish that has been reported was 23.5 inches.

As the water continues to cool, white bass will be feeding on young-of-the-year shad. Good bait choices for this time of year are crankbaits, plastics, and slab spoons. Target white bass in areas where they will be chasing shad, such as; points, ledges, and humps.

Wiper fishing has been good recently. Look for shad and you'll find wipers. Some fish to 26 inches have been taken.

The crappie spawn is over and fish will redistribute to deeper structure and channel ledges.

Saugeye fishing is good, but fewer big fish are being caught. Trolling crankbaits or jig and crawler in shallow water and breaks have been the best methods.

Use lively bait near structure. Fish of 60+ lb are in the lake.

White perch are present in Carey Park Fishing Pond. White perch are a nuisance species that are illegal to possess alive and SHOULD NOT be transported to other waters for any reason.

Zebra Mussels

Adult Zebra Mussels were found 7/31/08 at Lake Afton.

The zebra mussels reproduce during the warmer summer months and veligers (larval zebra mussels) are present in the water column. Zebra mussel veligers are too small to be seen with the unaided eye and they can be found in boat livewells, minnow buckets, boat bilges, water toys and anything else that is capable of holding even a small amount of water.

Be sure to drain all equipment before leaving the lake to avoid moving veligers to other waters. THIS INCLUDES MINNOW BUCKETS, BOAT LIVEWELLS AND BILGES!!!
