YOUTH OUTDOOR CLASS AT OSAGE HILLS COUNTRY CLUB OCT. 15

Shooting, archery, calling, trapping skills to be taught; registration deadline Oct. 3
ST. PAUL — On Oct. 15, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) will conduct a Youth Outdoors Class at Osage Hills Country Club just south of St. Paul. KDWPT staff from Neosho Wildlife Area will be on hand to teach kids 16 and younger (minimum age eight) the skills needed to hunt and trap safely. Lunch will be provided, and free hunting gear will be given to all participants. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The class is free and will provide expert instruction on numerous hunting and trapping techniques. Among the many activities, experts on the following topics will pass their knowledge on to participating youth:

  • duck and goose calling — Casey Self, Avery Outdoors, RNT Calls, and Tribal Outdoors;
  • turkey hunting scenarios, decoy use, calling, and equipment — Rod Petit, five-time Kansas state turkey calling champion and Elite pro-staff member for Knight & Hale calls;
  • furbearers and trapping equipment and techniques — Rob Carnahan and Rick Rutter;
  • wingshooting, live fire — shells provided, youth and adult shotguns available;
  • archery, live fire — National Archery in the Schools Program and 3-D targets, bows provided;
  • shotgun patterning;
  • yardage estimation; and
  • laser shot hunting simulation.
