KDWP HIGHLIGHTS LATE-SEASON HUNTING, MISPRINT IN 2009 REGULATIONS SUMMARY

Late Season Hunting

2008 deer permits NOT valid; 2010 hunting license required in January
PRATT — Many Kansas hunters look forward to the Christmas and New Year holiday as an opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy some of the best hunting of the season. Early January antlerless deer seasons are especially popular for hunters who have not filled a permit or who want to put more deer in the freezer.
Hunters should always carry a copy of the 2009 Hunting and Furharvesting Regulations Summary, but the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) wants to alert deer hunters to two misprints on Page 21 of that booklet. Under "Season Descriptions" in the Special Extended Firearm Whitetail (Jan. 11-17) section, the booklet states that "unfilled 2008-09 deer permits are valid in units 7, 8, or 15," but only unfilled 2009 permits are valid. Also in that section, the booklet states that a valid 2009 Kansas hunting license is also required, but a 2009 hunting license is no longer valid in 2010. A 2010 hunting license is required. The online version and reprints of the summary are corrected.

For outdoorsmen and women, this is a special time to go afield in pursuit of their favorite game, not just deer. Cool weather often makes game easier to locate, and competition for places to hunt is lighter than earlier in the seasons. For those looking for a good holiday hunt, the following season dates remain or will be open in late 2009 and into 2010:
