Cheyenne Bottoms Waterfowl Report
|Waterfowl numbers||We estimate 40,000 to 80,000 total ducks, mostly blue-winged teal. We are starting to see a few big ducks arriving. Duck numbers are holding steady, at best, but the ones we have are getting smart with regards to hunting activity.|
|Water level||Pools 1A is about 28 inches, 1B and 1C each are at 30 inches. Pool 2 is near 19.5 inches, Pools 3A is about 12 inches, 3B is about16.5, 4A is near 18 inches, and Pool 4B is about 17 inches and Pool 5 is about 12 inches.|
|Hunting conditions||Moist-soil plants resulting from the low water early and the June rains are excellent. Some of the best smartweed in years, as well as millet are present. With the warm weather the past week, hunter success has dropped.|
|Expected hunting success||For the period of October 18 thru 23 hunters averaged about 2.2 birds per hunter.|
Hunting pools will eventually be held from 15 to 18 inches. Pool 3A will be a primitive pool (no motorized watercraft) for the entire waterfowl season and kept at shallower depths. Hunters are encouraged to use the electronic Daily Hunt Permit system being introduced this year. This will eventually replace the paper permits.
