Madison City Lake is situated on the upper drainage basin of the scenic Verdigris River in southeast Kansas. The lake is located one half mile south and one mile west of the city of Madison. Construction of the lake was completed February 10, 1970 for the purposes of flood control, civic water supply, and recreation. The city of Madison still uses the lake as its sole water supply. In 1997, a rural water district also began to draw water out of the lake to supply its needs. Native tall grass prairie comprises most of the lake's drainage basin and contributes greatly to the water transparency. The 114 acre lake is surrounded by a 192 acre city owned and managed recreation area. It has 16 camp sites with electricalhook-ups, picnic and group shelters, flush toilets, sand swimming beach, boat ramp, four public docks, fish cleaning station, and a trap shooting range. A fish feeder was installed in 2003 and another one in 2010.
