Species

Rating

Size

Baits, Method, & Location

Channel Catfish

Good

Up to 5 lb.

Look for channel catfish around structure and on windblown shores. Use dead shad on the bottom.

The catfish sample looked excellent last fall. The biggest fish in nets was a ten pounder, but many 5+ lb fish were sampled.

Wiper

Good

Up to 10 lb.

Wipers have been caught off the new and old dams recently. Some fish to 26 inches have been taken.

The wiper population looks good going into 2013. The density of wipers is high with lots of 2-3 lb fish.

Crappie

Good

Up to 14"

The crappie is getting started. Fish with small jigs and minnows off the rocky areas.

2013 should be a good year for crappie fishing. There are lots of keeper sized crappie in the lake with a few trophy-sized fish mixed in.

Saugeye

Fair

Up to 5 lb.

Saugeye fishing has been hit and miss off the old dam. Fish should be moving to the flats soon. Fishing should be good once the weather stabilizes.

Wellington should be one of the better bets for saugeye in the area in 2013. We did not stock saugeye in 2012 due to a statewide shortage, but keeper-sized saugeye are common.

Flathead Catfish

Fair

all sizes

Use lively bait near structure. Fish of 60+ lb are in the lake.

General Comments

The boat ramp just north of the old dam on the west side is now open for fishing boats. Pleasure boating is still prohibited due to low water, but fishing boats may launch.
