SCOTT STATE LAKE - Last Updated: 2/9/2012

Species

Rating

Size

Baits, Method & Location

2011 Sampling Results

Walleye

Fair

17"=33%

25-27"=67%

Walleye inhabit the lake in moderate number but size quality is good. Walleye stocking has been suspended in favor of establishment of saugeye, thus it is expected walleye will slowly phase out over the next 5 to 8 years.

Saugeye

Fair

10"=17%

15"=83%

Saugeye have begun to establish themselves and the population currently consists of 2010 and 2011 yearclasses. Another stocking is planned for the spring of 2012. Although it is early to judge this species' performance, existing fish appear to be growing normally and appear to be approximately twice as numerous as walleye. There will be a fair number of saugeye that exceed 15" in length so some harvest is expected.

Crappie

Fair/Good

5-7"=17%

8-9"=76%

10-11"=7%

White crappie remain extremely abundant and larger fish are scarce due to growth problems resulting from overcrowding. It is hoped that saugeye can establish in sufficient abundance to limit white crappie reproduction.

Largemouth bass

Good

8-11"=29%

12-14"=27%

15-18"=39%

20-21"=5%

Largemouth bass are moderate to good in abundance. A wide size range of fish are available, and abundance of quality size fish is respectable. It is apparent that production and recruitment of young fish is good as is growth of fish throughout life. This population is well balanced and should provide quality largemouth angling opportunities.

Bluegill

Fair

4-5"=33%

6-7"=65%

8"=2%

Bluegill are abundant and size quality has increased.

Channel Catfish

Fair

11-16"=100%.

Channel catfish are moderate in abundance and small fish are generally the rule. Based upon results from last year's creel census, angler harvest of small fish is likely the most critical factor limiting the size quality of this popululation.

Winter Fishing Opportunities

Crappie

Good

See Above

Vertically fishing jigs and small slab spoons around the fish attractors out of a boat. Or jigs under a bobber around the fish attractors from shore. Anglers that have given it a try are routinely catching 20 to 40 fish.

Rainbow Trout

Fair/Good

0.5 lb. average

We stocked 1,100 trout in the State Lake and 200 trout in the Free Area Pond on January 30, 2012.

Corn, power bait, and salmon eggs fished off the bottom should be the best bet. There have been reports of a fair number of limits caught.

General Comments

ATTENTION: KDWPT will be releasing the recently completed “Kansas Crappie Bonanza” video on February 17, 2012. This 25-minute video covers Kansas crappie fishing during spring, summer, fall, and winter with tips and tactics to make you a better crappie angler. Visit the KDWPT homepage on February 17th and click on the Kansas Crappie Bonanza link to view the video!

Some ice still remains in the creek channel but the main body and the horseshoe area are open. The Free Area Pond is mostly ice free. Any remaining ice on the State Lake or Free Area Pond is much too weak to support ice fishing.

This fishing report is a generic fall/winter report providing general guidance to assist the angler in catching the various species mentioned above and will not be updated weekly unless new angler reports or other information warrants updates. Weekly updated fishing reports will resume during the spring of 2012.

Release all walleye/saugeye and largemouth bass less than 15 inches.

Please discard of leftover bait in a trash can, even baitfish. Remember it is illegal to release any fish into public water unless it was taken from that water!

Local fishing reports depend on information from local anglers themselves. This site will be updated if a hot report is sent in. Regular weekly fishing reports will resume in March 2011.

If you would like to post a fishing report go to http://ksfishing.blogspot.com/ and post a report for Region 3 and the lake you have been fishing. You may also call the Dodge City Regional office as 620-227-8609 to make a report.

Please discard of leftover bait in a trash can, even baitfish. Remember it is illegal to release any fish into public water unless it was taken from that water!
