Below are fields managed for dove hunting by Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism. Weather, soil moisture, and other factors could prevent management as planned. For the most up-to-date information, click on the area name in the left column or contact the area manager.

One 11 acre field of wheat stubble that will be mowed or burned prior to the season opener. Also one 14 ac. cane sorghum field planted and harvested early. This area is open to all hunters this year. Several, small ponds in the middle of the area also attract doves.

Cedar Bluff

Three fields (All proso millet) will be available and open to all hunters. Due to drought this year, the fields did not produce good seed. Fields will be mowed if seed is adequate.

Glen Elder

County Line Fields – 2 mi. east of Downs, KS. on Mitchell/Osborne County line south of Hwy 24 – One 13 ac. sunflower field with 5 ac. wheat stubble field nearby. Open to All hunters throughout the season.

North Granite Creek Fields – 1 mile North of Hwy 24 on the east and north sides of Granite Creek – 2 sunflower fields (5 & 7 ac.) with 12 ac. wheat stubble fields nearby. Sunflowers May be closed until noon on Sept. 3 for Youth Dove Hunt – check area website for updates. Wheat stubble fields open for entire season. Open to All hunters the remainder of season.

Mill Creek Fields – South of Cawker City on Causeway Road, then ½ mile east – 2 wheat stubble fields (5 & 3 ac.) will be manipulated for doves. Open to all hunters for the entire season.

Walnut Creek Mentor/Novice Area – South side of the lake and south of Glen Elder on Dam Road, then 2 miles west – One 13 ac. Sunflower field with 5 ac. wheat stubble field nearby. Mentor / Novice Area – Hunters must be adult mentors (18 or older) accompanied by at least 1 novice. Novice include youth age 18 and under or any person who has not dove hunted in previous years. Free Daily Permits are required for each individual hunter in the Mentor / Novice Area and are available at permit stations around the area.

Jamestown

A 240-acre dove hunting area has been created on the area north along Vale Road between 30th and 40th Roads. Eighteen acres of Sunflower field and 32 acres of wheat stubble will be manipulated for doves. Doves are also attracted to the shallow water areas found on the area. Special restrictions are in place and posted open to Youth / Mentor / Novice hunters only for the first 4 days of the season (9/1-9/4). Youth/Novice hunters must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older who may hunt this area as long as they have at least 1 youth or novice hunter with them. Novice hunters are those hunters 18 or younger or any person who has not hunted doves before. The entire 240-acre area will open to all hunters on September 5. Daily Hunter Survey permits are required and are available at the Information Centers.

Norton

Ottawa State Lake

Two sunflower fields (6.2 & 5.6 ac.) will be manipulated for doves. Both fields will be closed until Sept. 11 for a youth dove hunt. An area around the fields will be mowed and posted. On Sept. 11, these fields will open to all hunters. The remainder of the property is open to all hunters for dove season.

Wilson

Cedar Creek Fields – Sunflowers; 12 acres. The sunflower field and adjacent fallow and disked fields are CLOSED TO HUNTINGSEPT 1st – 3rd, for a Youth Dove Hunt. The fields will open to all hunters on Sept. 4th. See the website for information on the youth hunt.

Decker Road Fields – Sunflowers; 8 acres. Open to all dove hunters Sept 1. Strips are mowed weekly in August through a 7 acre sunflower field. Portions of the adjacent fallow field will be disked.

Mellard Road Fields – Sunflowers; 10 acres. Open to all dove hunters Sept 1. Strips will be mowed weekly in August.

Dam Road Fields – Sunflowers; 12 acres. The sunflower field and adjacent wheat field are CLOSED TO HUNTINGSEPT 1st – 3rd, for a Youth Dove Hunt. The fields will open to all hunters on Sept. 4th. See the website for information on the youth hunt.

Kansas River Wildlife Area

Urish Tract - Seven acres of wheat and seven acres of sunflowers. All hunting will be by permit. Hunting permits for the first five days of the season will be issued through the draw in the department's special hunts program. Beginning on September 6 hunting will be available to everyone but you must obtain a daily hunt permit available at the kiosk on Urish Road. A safety zone will be enforced on this property. The safety zone will be marked in the field and is designated on the area brochure. Please check the information kiosk for further information. Field is located one mile north of 10th & Urish in Topeka. A map of the wildlife area is available at the Kansas River Wildlife Area web page.

Fitzgerald Tract – Twelve acres of sunflowers. All hunting will be by permit. Hunting permits will be issued through the draw in the department’s special hunts program or issued directly from the regional office. This is a youth / mentor hunt. The mentor can hunt. The use of non-toxic shot is required for this hunt. The field is located approximately eight miles west of Topeka on I-70 and ½ mile east of West Union Road & 4th street.

Perry

Five areas throughout the area are managed for dove hunting. Four wheat fields, four sunflower fields, and one combination refuge field will be mowed and/or burned prior to season: Area 1 has 5 acres wheat 20 acres sunflowers and a combination refuge field of 14 acres. The refuge field will be closed to all activity Sept 1-4. Area one is just east of 190th and Swabville Rd. Area 2 has 9 acres of sunflowers located just north of the wildlife area office. Area 3 has 8 acres of wheat and 9 acres of sunflowers located at 170th and Finney Rd. Area 4 has 7 acres of wheat located in the Youth/Handicap area south of 162nd and Harvey Rd. Area 5 has 13 acres of wheat and 19 acres of sunflowers located at 154th and Ferguson Rd.
All fields will have daily hunter survey stations. Hunters will be required to complete these before and after hunting. This information helps guide future management efforts. Park in parking areas only. Detailed maps and information will be posted on Perry Wildlife Area wep page.

Clinton

Seven dove fields throughout the Wildlife Area. One sunflower field is on 1400rd, 1 mile east of County Road 1023. There are three fields on the north side of the Wakarusa river along 89th street, 2 of which are both sunflowers and burned wheat, one is only sunflowers. On the south side of the river there are 2 burned wheat fields. One is just west of the Elk Creek wetlands one mile and the other is on the north side of pool 2 in the Elk Creek wetlands. This field is non-toxic shot only! One sunflower and wheat field west of Shadden Rd will be completely closed Sept 1st and 2nd so that it can be reserved for a youth hunt sponsored by the Lawrence Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation. This field will be open to the public at 12pm (noon) on Sept 3th but will only be youth/mentor hunting through the 4th. Youth/mentor means youth 16 and younger may hunt when accompanied by an adult. Adults may hunt as long as they are with a youth who is also hunting.

Some, if not all fields, will have daily hunter survey stations. Hunters in these fields will be required to complete these before and after hunting. This information helps guide future management efforts. Detailed maps and information will be posted on the Clinton Wildlife Area web pages.

Milford

Six sunflower fields totaling 59 acres are remaining ranging in size from 4 acres to 14 acres. Approximately 20 acres of sunflowers were lost due to flooding. There is also one 10 acre patch of millet that was planted on the West Broughton Youth Area after the sunflower field was wiped out by the flood. Strips will be mowed starting the week of August 15. Three wheat patches totaling about 20 acres, which range in size from 4 to 8 acres have been set aside for burning or mowing. Half of the wheat will be burned/ mowed the week of August 15 and the rest will be done during the last week of August. A map is available on the Milford Area news page. All hunters using managed dove fields are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit.

Five sunflower fields totaling 13.5 acres were planted on Walk-In-Hunting Areas (WIHA) on the Clay/Dickinson county line. 1/3 of the sunflower fields will be mowed about one week prior to the dove opener.

Hillsdale

Field 1 (Hillsdale Point Dove Field) located east of Gardner road and 239th street has 25 acres planted to sunflowers and wheat. Wheat is burned prior to season. Hunters at Field 1 must obtain and fill out a free permit that will be available on site. Over seventeen acres of wheat, sunflowers, and corn are located in the Wade branch area on the west side of the reservoir. Due to flooding along the Missouri River and at Elwood Wildlife Area there will be very limited dove hunting opportunities in 2011. Only a small portion of one sunflower dove field remains and no mowing will be possible because of wet ground.

Only a small portion of one wheat dove field remains and no mowing will be possible because of wet ground. The main parking area and access road at Benedictine are closed due to flooding, so parking will be limited.

Bolton

2 sunflower fields totaling 5 acres and 2 wheat fields totaling 8 acres have been planted. Both wheat and sunflowers look great and will be burned/mowed in the weeks leading up to the dove opener. Free daily hunt permits will be required of all hunters and are available at hunt site. The area is located 2 1/2 miles north and 1 1/2 miles west of Paxico along Mulberry Creek Rd. No special restrictions on these fields.

Jeffrey Energy Center

UNIT #1: 1 wheat field totaling 1 acre and two sunflower fields totaling 3.5 acres have been planted in Unit #1. Wheat will be burnt in stages starting the second week of August. Sunflower fields look great and will be mowed before the opener. Free daily hunt permits will be required of all hunters and are available at hunt site. Unit 1 is located 2 1/2 miles north of Belvue and the fields may be accessed along Tower Hill and Marks Rds. No special restrictions on these fields.

Unit #2: 6 wheat fields totaling 7 acres and 5 sunflower fields totaling 8 acres have been planted in Unit #2. These fields will be mowed/burned in stages leading up to the dove opener. Fields in Unit #2 are reserved for special youth hunts done by Westar Energy the first weekend of season. Fields are open to public after the first weekend. Free daily hunt permits will be required of all hunters and are available at hunt site. Hunters must check in with the Guard House before entering Unit #2.

Tuttle Creek

Three areas of managed dove fields are available. Free daily hunt permits will be required of all hunters and are available at hunt site.

Area 1 - One 13 acre sunflower field and one 14 acre wheat field. The fields are located at the Old Irving Townsite, or 2 ½ miles south and 3 miles east of Blue Rapids. No special restrictions on these fields.

Area 2 – One 25 acre sunflower field and one 16 acre wheat field. The fields are located just west of the Black Vermillion Marsh, or 2 miles south of the intersection of Zenith and 14th roads. No special restrictions on these fields.

Area 3 - One 17 acre sunflower field and one 8 acre wheat field. The fields are located adjacent to the Olsburg Marsh along Cleburne Rd. Non-toxic shot will be required of all hunters on these fields due to the close proximity to the marsh.

Cheyenne Bottoms

One 5-acre field of wheat stubble over-seeded with sunflowers. The field is located 0.8 miles east of the intersection of K-156 and NE 50 Rd. Nontoxic shot required. All hunters using managed dove fields are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit.

Four acres of sunflower were planted along the Mitigation Marsh for youth hunting. All hunters using managed dove fields are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit.

Texas Lake

Three areas are available. One 10-acre winter wheat field that will be mowed prior to opening day. Location from the intersection of Hwy. 54 and 130th Ave.: approximately. 2.5 miles north and 1/2 mile west. This is adjacent to the county road. The second area is a small area of mowed wheat ¼ mile west of the 10 acre field. It is located south of the parking lot along NW 10th St. The third area is a small area of mowed wheat adjacent to the parking lot located on NW 140th Ave. Non-toxic shot required. All hunters are required to complete a free daily hunt permit available at parking lots on the wildlife area. As always, other dove hunting opportunities are available at Texas Lake Wildlife Area and nearby Pratt Sandhills Wildlife Area.

Cheney

Field #1 = One field in the Refuge will be designated for Youth hunting on September 1st and 3rd only. Shooting hours will be from ½ hour before sunrise to 12:00 noon. Only one licensed accompanying adult (18 yoa and older) per youth hunter. The accompanying adult MAY hunt. Check-in, Check-out, and on-site survey permit is required. Non-toxic shot only! Field location is southeast of the intersection of Mayfield Rd and Pretty Prairie Rd, (follow the signs). No hunting in the Refuge except for this special youth hunt per the restrictions.

Kaw

A 16-acre field was planted to sunflowers. But due to the extreme heat & drought they didn’t produce. A harvested 38 acre wheat field with trees on the north side is heavily used by area doves. It is located south of Silverdale on Cowley 1on the west side. It is the just north of the third bridge and south of 304th Road of the turnpike along NE Chelsea Road.

Marion

Marion Wildlife Area will have three areas designated as Dove Management Fields for the 2011 season. The first area is located along the Cottonwood River just north of the Reservoir, directly west of the area office at 260th and Jade. This two acre sunflower field will be mowed prior to opening day. The second field is a 35 acre wheat stubble field that will be burnt in sections prior to season. This field is on 220th just east of Kanza Road. Parking for this field will be along 220th. The third field is a 7 acre wheat stubble field that will be burnt prior to season opener. This field is on the west side of Kanza Road just south of French Creek Bridge.

McPherson Wetlands

McPherson Wetlands will have one 62 acre sunflower field located 1 mile north of 11th and Arapaho road, Southeast of Inman. This field is open to all hunters. Our agricultural tenant will harvest the majority of this field. The remaining, KDWPT share, will be mowed prior to dove season and a small portion will be left standing. Non-toxic shot is required. This field has produced outstanding hunting opportunities the past two years.

El Dorado

One large field has been managed at El Dorado Wildlife Area with the intent of providing dove hunting opportunities. This 28 acre tract has planted to sunflowers and should provide fair to good dove hunting opportunities. Portions of this field will be mowed (if conditions allow) to enhance dove use and hunter access. The field can be accessed from the east by traveling 0.5 mile north of the junction of NE 70th Street and Interstate 35, or from the west by traveling 0.5 mile south of the junction of NE 85th Street and NE Chelsea Road. Please be courteous and aware of other hunting parties while using these fields! Council Grove

Three sunflower tracts (10, 10, 11 acres) and one wheat tract (9 acres) should provide fair to good dove hunting opportunities at Council Grove Wildlife Area. Portions of each of the sunflower fields will be mowed (if conditions allow) to enhance dove use and hunter access. The 9 acre wheat field is comprised of approximately 7 acres of wheat stubble and 2 acres of standing wheat that has been mowed and the entire field burned. Adjacent to this wheat field is a 10 acre weedy sunflower field. Please note that the KDWPT’s share of sunflowers in this field will likely be mowed. That crop that remains standing belongs to an area agricultural producer. Please respect that producer and avoid disturbing their crop. These 2 fields can be found just north of the eastern most parking area along the north side of Munkers Creek. Another 10 acre sunflower field is located about 0.3 miles north of the parking area and information kiosk near Gilmore Creek. The 11 acre sunflower field is located 0.5 mile east of the junction of 1200 Road and M Avenue. Please be courteous and aware of other hunting parties while using these fields! Fall River

Four sunflower fields all totaling approximately 80 acres. One of these fields is on T Road approximately 1 1/4 mile South of 130th St., One field about ½ mile south of 100th and V Road, the last two are about 1 ½ mile east of KS 99 on 80th St. just east of the office. The fields on 80th street will be closed to hunting until the evening of September 3rd for a youth dove hunt. A map of the dove fields can be found on the Fall River web page. All hunters using managed dove fields are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit.

Hollister

There are approximately 19 acres of managed dove fields planted to sunflowers on the HOWA. This field is located approximately 1/4 mi. north of the dead end of Grand Rd. approximately ½ mile east of the intersection of Grand Rd. and 140th Rd. Hunters must then walk approximately ¼ mile along a two track road to the field. No vehicles are allowed on this road. Vehicles will be allowed to pull off the road and park on the north side of Grand Rd. to the west of the railroad tracks. All hunters using the sunflower field are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit. Additional dove hunting opportunity will also be available on the north and south side of Hackberry Rd. between 145th Rd. and 155th Rd. These fields consist of wheat stubble that was overseeded to lespedeza and will be baled prior to season.

Marais des Cygnes

One 20-acre field located east of Snider Road, 1 mi north of 1350 Rd. 1/2 sunflowers (partially mowed), 1/2 cut/burned wheat. Crop production good with lots of seed to attract doves. Only fair dove numbers through Aug 18th. Only non-toxic shot is allowed. Prediction: fair - good. All hunters using managed dove fields in this region are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit.

Mined Land

Two unrestricted sunflower fields will be available to dove hunters. One field is located on unit 28 and is 19 acres in size. A second field is located on unit 13 and is 18 acres in size, No age or time restrictions.

A third field is located on unit 21 and is 12 acres in size. This field is restricted to a maximum of 20 mentored youth hunters for a September 1st, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. hunt. Both mentors and youth will be allowed to hunt the following Saturday, September 3. This is a special hunt and youth hunters must apply online. Any openings following the drawing will be filled by request via phone. All hunters using managed dove fields are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit. Cards are available at all hunt sites.

Spring River

Toronto

2 fields totaling approximately 22 acres have been planted to sunflowers this year. These fields are located 3 miles south of US 54 highway on GG Rd. then approximately 1/2 mile east on 130th Street. A map of these fields can be found on the Toronto WA web page. All hunters using managed dove fields are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit.

Dove Flats

Dove Flats has 1 sunflower field that is 15 acres in size. Sunflowers will be mowed and/or lightly disked in the weeks leading up to the opener. One wheat field has been burned, and other standing wheat stubble fields are nearby. This property will be reserved for all of the opening day for youth/mentor dove hunting. This allows one adult to hunt with a youth 17 years and younger. Both the youth and accompanying mentor can hunt. A Free Daily Hunt Permit will be required to hunt this property. Dove Flats will be open to all hunters after the 1st. The parking lot and registration access is located ½ mile south of the intersection of County Roads 2300 and 5600. The sunflowers are located ¼ mile east of the parking lot and cannot be seen from the roadway. All hunters using managed dove fields are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit.

Elk City

Elk City WA has 3 sunflower fields, each roughly 20 acres in size. These flowers will be partially mowed prior to season. Dove Management hunting areas will be posted prior to the season opener. Fields are located west of Independence, Ks. One area is located at the intersection of County Roads 2900 and 4200 and has sunflowers and burned wheat. The second area is located ¼ mile west of County Roads 3325 and 4600 and also has sunflowers and burned wheat. The third area is south of Elk City on the shortcut road where it crosses the Elk River. The sunflowers are located on the east side of the shortcut and south of the river by the fishing access parking lot. All hunters using managed dove fields are required to obtain and complete a free daily hunt permit.

Melvern

There are 2 sunflower fields planted for Doves this year on Melvern Wildlife Area. One is located just north or the Reading sewer ponds and is about 15 acres in size. The other is north of the rail-road tracks east of Reading, on the north side of 3-Duck Marsh. That field is about 6 acres in size. Both fields will be mowed and ready for the dove season opener on Sept. 1
