Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan
The State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) serves as a vision for outdoor recreation in Kansas. It is designed to meet the requirements of the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act of 1965 (LWCF) which requires states to have an approved State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan on file with the National Park Service.
The over-arching purpose of the LWCF, as established by Congress, is to preserve, develop and assure accessibility to quality outdoor recreation resources for active participation in recreation and “to strengthen the health and vitality of the citizens of the United States”.
To that end, over the last 40 plus years, the State of Kansas has received over $50 million in 50% matching LWCF dollars, benefitting approximately 700 different projects at the state and local level.
This Plan is a revision of a 2003 document. It includes assessments of the state’s outdoor recreation and demographic trends, current and optimal levels of supply, and significant natural resources and establishes a list of priorities on which to focus for the next 5 years.
