CLINTON STATE PARK FREE PARK ENTRANCE DAY AUG. 14

Fishing clinic, animals on display, free kids tents highlight event
LAWRENCE — Clinton State Park will allow free park entrance on Aug. 14, while hosting events geared toward youth. A youth fishing clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Lake Henry, just south of the park office. Kids will learn how to identify fish, improve casting skills, and bait a hook. A Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks fisheries biologist will be on hand to teach skills and answer questions. After a 20-minute introduction, kids will go fishing and have a chance to win prizes for the biggest fish, smallest fish, most fish, and more. Fishing poles and bait will be provided, and a fishing "goodie bag" will be given to all who attend.

The event will include more than fishing. Participants will get a close-up look of live animals on display at Shelter #6 in Campground #3 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cages will be step up outside for a viewing of snakes and turtles. Biologists will teach participants about venomous snakes and other animals, and a snake identification booklet will be given to all who attend.

To complete the experience, tent rental will be available for $8.50 per tent. Each camp will be offered a free kids' tent for the event. Campsites with water and electricity cost an additional $9. For more information, phone 785-842-8562.
