April 25, 2015 State Parks Open House

On Saturday, April 25, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) will host a free entrance day and open houses at all state parks. Visitors also will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of events at most parks.

The state parks and their special events are listed below:

Cedar Bluff

  • Park Office will be open 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.  
  • Free hot dog feed from 12 p.m. - 1 a.m.
  • Refreshments served all day.  
  • Staff will be available for questions and for cabin tours.  



  • The Park Office will be open extended hours of  9 a.m.—3 p.m.
  • At the park office patrons can view animals native to the state park. 
  • Register for our upcoming OK Kids Day event (August 8, 2015).
  • Participate in a Scavenger Hunt for prizes. 
  • Complete Wildlifer Challenges! 
  • Special Olympic Fish Tournament will be launching from Boat Ramp #2 near the Clinton Marina.
  • Atlas Course Race will be held in our State Park. 


  • The park office will be open from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Disc Golf tournament: 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
  • A guided tour of the CCC campsite trail and museum will take place at the entrance of the park.  
  • Cabin Open House and Touch a Fire Truck presentations will be held at Evening Breeze Point.  
  • There will be a kids fishing clinic starting at 1:00 p.m.

Cross Timbers & Fall River


El Dorado

Elk City

  • Breakfast and Registration - 78:00 a.m.
  • Office/Gatehouse will be open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Free Breakfast of Biscuits & Gravy for first 100 people to arrive at the main shop behind the office
  • Safety Meeting - 8:00 a.m.
  • Earth Day Clean-up with KDHE - 8:00 a.m. to Noon
  • Fishing Clinic with the Fisheries Biologist, Archery, and Geocaching - 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Glen Elder




  • 8 a.m. to 12 noon is an Earth Day Event, sponsored by Kansas Dept of Health and Environment and Kansas Dept of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism. Volunteers will receive a t-shirt and breakfast provided by Westar Energy. Registration is required, and can be completed online at http://www.kdheks.gov/waste/earthday.html
  • 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. is the 1st Annual Adopt a Flower Program. Bring in any annual or perennial flowering plant to the state park office. Flowers will be planted at your choice of designated locations throughout the park.
  • 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. there will be a Ribbon Cutting/Dedication Ceremony for the Cottonwood and Cedar Point Utility Campground Upgrades. This will be held at the Cottonwood Utility Campground.


  • Volunteer Park Cleanup - All day
  • Disc/Foot golf course tours - All day
  • Ice Cream Social provided by our Friends Group - Afternoon



  • Antique Car Show (weather permitting)
  • Fund Raising Equestrian Trail Ride (Wild Horse Campground) must bring your own horse to ride.
  • Cabin Open for touring
  • KDHE Earth Day Park Cleanup - volunteers - need to sign up ahead of time at http://www.kdheks.gov/waste/earthday.html 
  • Office open with refreshments


Prairie Dog

  • Office open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Cabin and Adobe tours:  9:00 a.m. to Noon
  • StoryWalk ribbon cutting on the nature trail:  1:00 p.m.
  • Guided StoryWalk nature trail walk:  1:15 p.m.

Prairie Spirit Trail

  • Location: Old Depot Museum, 135 West Tecumseh St, Ottawa, KS 66067
  • Presenters:  Prairie Spirit Trail State Park, Flint Hills Nature Trail (KRTC), Get Outdoors Kansas, City of Garnett, Franklin County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Friends of the Prairie Spirit Trial
  • The Flint Hills Nature Trail and the Prairie Spirit Trail should be in Spring bloom for anyone wanting to enjoy them and stop by to get a free meal and information.  
  • Visitors can meet with trail, outdoor, and community representatives to receive information on trails and outdoor events in Kansas.  Members of other clubs and groups will be visiting the event so feel free to mingle and learn about their group and events. 
  • Free grilled Hot dogs will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and there will be no fee to use the Prairie Spirit Trail for the day.

Lake Scott

Tuttle Creek

  • Office Open: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Zombie Run: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. for Humanity (By Beach)
  • Park Clean-up: 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friends of Tuttle Creek (Meet Park Office)
  • Archery shooting: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Archery Range)
  • Sling Shot shooting: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Archery Range)
  • Tie dye shirts: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Archery Range)
  • Staged Photo booth: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Archery Range)
  • Cabin Open House with refreshments 10 a.m. to noon (Friends of Tuttle Sioux Cabin)
  • GIVE AWAYS: 2 t shirts, hoodie, coffee mug  


  • PLANT FLOWERS.  Help add color to our park, plant a flower.   Maybe you purchased a few too many for your flower bed at home, don't let them go to waste, bring them out to the park.  We will have an area at the entrance of Rock Point ready for you to plant them. After you have planted them stop by the office for some refreshments.
