March 29, 2014 State Parks Open House

On Saturday, March 29, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) will host a free entrance day and open houses at all state parks. Visitors also will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of events at most parks.

The state parks and their special events are listed below:

Cedar Bluff

  • 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Open house 
  • 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Free hot dog feed 
  • Park and cabin tours all day
  • The park will have drawings for - 1 youth T-shirt, 1 adult T-shirt, 1 hoodie, and 1 hat.


  • 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.: Office open for permit sales and to answer questions
  • Office will be serving cookies.  
  • There will be a sign up for the Statewide Cabin Stay give-away
  • Cheney State Park merchandise available in the office along with a drawing for some T-shirts.  
  • There will be cabin tours and patrons can take a tour of the Ninnescah Sailing Association facilities
  • Visit with members of the Cheney Lake Association and learn more about their mission here at Cheney State Park.  
  • There will also be information available in the office and our spring newsletter will be available.


  • Park Office Open -  8 a.m. - 6 p.m.   Drawings, License Sales, Camping Reservations and visiting animals on display.  (Last chance for Discounted Annual Camping & 14 Night Punch Card Permits.)
  • (In the Park Office) T-shirt & Cabin StayDrawings - T-shirt Drawing - Enter to win a FREE T-shirt.   Cabin Drawing - Enter for a chance to win a One Night Stay in a cabin.   Winners will be drawn on Monday, March 31 for a FREE T-shirt of their choice from our merchandise on hand and a one night stay in a cabin.
  • (In the Park Office) OK Kids Day Registration - Register for our 11th Annual Outdoor Kansas Kids event held on August 9th.  Fishing Derby & Animal Show-n-Tell events.   FREE ENTRY DAY AS WELL
  • (In the Park Office) Wildlifer Challenge - We'll handout information about how you can participate in 15 of the 20 suggested activities for the challenge right here in the state park.    Win prizes through that program.   Find the Details  by visiting: http://kansaswildlifer.com
  • Cabin Open House -  9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The two bedroom Wakarusa Valley Cabin will be open to the public for a walk through tour.   
  • Cabin Drawing - Enter to win a One Night Stay in a Cabin.  Winner will be drawn on Monday, March 31.
  • 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m. & 4:00 p.m.: Animal Show-n-Tell - There will be 3 times for you to come and see our Live Animals on Display and enjoy an informative talk about them and about some other Kansas Critters.   
  • 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.: Search N Find activity!  A "Flat Stanley" type of event.   We'll hide Images of our "Flat" Ranger Ray pictures around the State Park!   See how many you can find as you spend your day in our State Park.  Prizes for all who participate! 
  • Go one step further and visit our Craft area to participant in another activity! Make a Flat replica of yourselves and use it to complete the another challenge!   For every picture that you turn into the office on Open House Day you'll receive a prize.   The more you turn in the bigger the prize!   (We will be able to help you transfer & print out your pictures.)
  • Craft Area  - 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 pm   Make a Flat replica of yourself (a paper cut out that you'll be able to color/decorate).   As you visit the rest of the State Park through out the day, you can complete a search and find activity.  You can pose your likeness in an area and take a picture of where they visit.  Share them with us so we can see what fun things you're doing.     We'll get your started with the activity by taking the first photo of you and your cut out self as the first place you've visited in the Park. 
  • 5 K & Fun Run - (CANCELLED)


  • They are titling their events the “Spring into Summer Experience”
  • 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.: Friends of Crawford State Park will host a free welcome back breakfast at the marina building.  Donations will be accepted and used to fund the July fireworks display in the park.
  • 10:00 a.m.: Dedication for the Don Lamb Fishing Access Area within the Park
  • 11:00 a.m.: Disc Golf Tournament for all interested parties will begin and be held on the recently constructed disc golf course within the park.
  • 1:00 p.m.: Park staff will host tours of the 160 acre Skinner Property that was recently donated to the park.  This area holds lots of Kansas History in a small area.  If you are interested in the history of the area prior to statehood and the “Bleeding Kansas” era you’ll want to take a short trip to visit this newly acquired area.
  • Tour a cabin and see some additions that have been added since last year.

Cross Timbers & Fall River

  • 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.: Cabin tour at Timber Walker cabin. Even people familiar with our cabins will see some recent improvements made to them over the winter.  Check it out.
  • 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.: outside the Timber Walker Cabin staff will have a PWC simulator set up.  Always wanted to see what being on a PWC was like but don’t want to get wet well this is your chance.  Fun for all ages.
  • 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Courtesy Boat Inspections at Toronto Point East boat rap.  Make sure you have everything safe and legal before you head out on the water this year.


  • 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Open house 
  • Cabin open for viewing
  • Hot dogs and refreshments
  • 5K Run/Walk sponsored by Osage City Warmth Fund
  • Games

El Dorado

  • 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.: Park office open
  • 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.: FREE Boat inspections
  • 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.: Cabin Open in Walnut River
  • 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.: Archery Range Clinic
    • Basic instruction will be given, with an introduction to bows, bowhunting, and bowhunting ethics. (Hot dogs & pop will be sold - Proceeds go to Range Improvements.
  • 10:00 a.m.: Nature Photography Hike

Elk City

  • 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Fishing Derby at Kids Fishing Pond
  • Items below are being held in conjunction with the local Park Friends Group known as the P.I.T. group and proceeds are used for projects that benefit the park.
  • 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.: Pasture Golf Tournament Tee off. $10 team entry fee. Prize awarded for first place.
  • 3:00 p.m.: Horseshoe Tournament (2 Person Teams) Entry Fee of $10 per team. Prize awarded for first place.
  • 5:00 p.m.: Free cookout begins. Door prize drawings to be held then as well.
  • We hope to have more activities schedule in the coming weeks (all will take place between 1pm and 5pm)

Glen Elder

  • 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.: Park office and cabin open 


  • 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Park office open for permit sales and to answer questions
  • 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Shooting range open for questions


  • 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.: Park office open 
  • 9:00 a .m. – 12:00 p.m.: Cabin open house 


  • 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.: Park office open 
  • 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.: Cabin tours

Prairie Spirit Trail

  • 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.: Old Depot Museum in Ottawa, KS (Walk, Bike or bring your pet! Free Lunch)

Lake Scott

  • 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Open house and all events: 
  • Cabin tours
  • 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.: John Deere will be displaying new Gators and utility tractors
  • 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.: Percival Packing will be displaying Traeger Grills 
  • Punch and Cookies will be served all day.
  • The park will have drawings for coffee mug, plastic water bottle, baseball cap, hoodie, and a T-shirt.

Tuttle Creek

  • 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.: Office Open 
  • 10:00 - 2:00 p.m.: Archery Range Open for archery, sling shot, hatchet throwing, crossbow
  • 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.: Nature Bird Hike  (Meet at Park Office)
  • 9:00 a.m. - noon: Kiowa Cabin Open House refreshments served
  • 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.: Hunter Education Field Day , Fancy Creek Range (Students must also attend classroom sessions at Green Valley Community Center March 25 and April 1 and pre-register at the park office)
  • Drawings for two T-shirts, a hoodie, coffee mug


  • 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.: Open house 
  • 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.: Plainville Boat Shop will be displaying boats and equipment 
  • 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m: Cabin tours 
  • Cookies and Coffee will be served.
  • The park will have a drawing for: 2 - youth T-shirts, 2 - adult T-shirts, and a hoodie.
