DRAFT Strategic Plan

Now available for Public Review

The DRAFT Strategic Plan for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is ready for public review. This plan will provide an overall picture of the goals and objectives as seen by the Department that need to be met in order to accomplish the Department's Mission, namely to:

  • Conserve and Enhance Kansas' natural heritage, its wildlife and its habitats to ensure future generations the benefits of the state's diverse, living resources;
  • Provide the public with opportunities for use and appreciation of the natural resources of Kansas, consistent with the conservation of those resources;
  • Inform the public of the status of the natural resources of Kansas to promote understanding and gain assistance in achieving this mission.

The Plan is divided into chapters for Common Issues, Providing for Outdoor Recreation (Parks), Hunting, Fishing, Boating, Conserving Habitat and Species, and Enforcing the Law. The chapters listed in the Table of Contents are linked to the text in the document

Within each chapter, following the stated goals and objectives, issues are identified that are either hindrances to, or opportunities for meeting the stated goals and objectives. Strategies listed under the issues are activities that the Department could undertake.

This plan is a clearing house for all strategies for all goals. Not all are compatible - for instance, developing a nature trail as part of informing the public may conflict with preserving a certain species habitat. The goal of this plan is to lay out the possibilities, and provide a framework for annual plans. For annual plans (operational planning) these conflicts are considered. Also, Secretary's priorities are developed annually to define areas of emphasis and may provide additional guidance for resolving any conflicts that might arise, and determining the best course of action. In addition, the Department will develop a document which will focus the management direction that it will take for the next five years after the Strategic Plan is completed.
