Region 3

This is a collection of all the Region 3 Waterfowl Report

CHEYENNE BOTTOMS - Last Updated: 10/30/2014

Waterfowl numbers  We estimate 40,000 to 80,000 total ducks, mostly blue and green-winged teal.   We are starting to see a few big ducks arriving.  We have seen a big jump in redhead numbers the past few days.  With the recent cold front we have picked up about 3,000 to 5,000 white-fronted geese.
Water level Pools 1A is about 27 inches, 1B and 1C each are at 30 inches. Pool 2 is near 19 inches, Pools 3A is about 11 inches, 3B is about 16.5, 4A is near 17 inches, and Pool 4B is about 17 inches and Pool 5 is about 11 inches.
Hunting conditions Moist-soil plants resulting from the low water early and the June rains are excellent.  Some of the best smartweed in years, as well as millet are present.  With the warm weather the past week, hunter success has dropped.
Expected hunting success For the period of October 26 thru 30 hunters averaged about 3.8 birds per hunter.
Comments

Hunting pools will eventually be held from 15 to 18 inches. Pool 3A will be a primitive pool (no motorized watercraft) for the entire waterfowl season and kept at shallower depths.  Hunters are encouraged to use the electronic Daily Hunt Permit system being introduced this year.  This will eventually replace the paper permits.

The whooping cranes that were present early this week have apparently left.
