This is a collection of all the Region 3 Waterfowl Report
CHEYENNE BOTTOMS - Last Updated: 11/25/2014
|Waterfowl numbers||We estimate 30,000 to 60,000 total ducks, comprised of a good mix of big duck species with over half composed of mallard, gadwall and shoveler.. We estimate goose numbers to be 100,000 to 200,000, with a few more snow geese than dark geese.|
|Water level||Pools 1A is about 19 inches, 1B and 1C each are at 28 inches. Pool 2 is near 17 inches, Pools 3A is about 12 inches, 3B is about 16, 4A is near 17 inches, and Pool 4B is about 18 inches and Pool 5 is about 12 inches.|
Moist-soil plants resulting from the low water early and the June rains are excellent. Some of the best smartweed in years, as well as millet are present.
We are now ice free, except perhaps for thin ice in the mornings.
|Expected hunting success||For the period of November 19 thru November 24 duck hunters averaged about 3 ducks per hunter. Goose hunters using the Goose Hunting Zones are averaged about 1 goose per hunter. Pheasant hunters for the same period averaged less than 1 bird per hunter. A few geese have also been taken in the Pools.|
Hunting pools will eventually be held from 15 to 18 inches. Pool 3A will be a primitive pool (no motorized watercraft) for the entire waterfowl season and kept at shallower depths. Hunters are encouraged to use the electronic Daily Hunt Permit system being introduced this year. This will eventually replace the paper permits.
Duck numbers dropped significantly with the cold weather arriving, but are rebounding and providing good hunting opportunities. As we loose our ice their numbers may continue to increase.
